The Vintage Laundry Studio Redo

LeAnn Wester Stephenson

I created this pattern on my studio wall at The Vintage Laundry Studios in Austin, Texas for two reasons. One being that I just felt this large expanse of wall needed some interest. And secondly, I love the tone on tone effect that it has.

I began with painting my wall Musical Mist (150c-1) flat interior by Behr. Then I took a long level and measured one of the octagon shapes out on a centered place on the wall and placed 2.5" painters tape along the inside of the shape. The octagon is 20" x 20" at horizontal and vertical bars. Then I added a 10" square to the sides and top and bottom and then just expanded on that until the wall was full.

After all the tape was down I used a matte medium to seal the edges of the tape, so that the top color wouldn't bleed under the tape. I let that dry thoroughly and then painted over the whole wall with Hawaiian Shell (150C-2) by Behr .

Let dry again and remove tape and presto! a beautiful wall with a great graphic "Jonathan Adler-esque" look to it! It took me about 12 -14 hrs to do from start to finish and the cost was about $50.

I love how it looks and I'm proud that I actually finished a project that I started! Wooo!Hoo!
Check back with me in the following days - I have more groovy projects for vintage finds.

GotWhimsey.com

I thought I would share a great business idea that a couple of friends have made into a reality. Got Whimsey is a company that offers planned or chartered trips to flea markets, boutiques and other shopping related destinations in and around Austin. Great idea - right!! They'll spoil you with crudites, confections, and cocktails to suit the occasion. Founders Mandy and Meredith Cloud - they say they are two sisters, two designers, two Austinites and too fanatical about hunting and capturing the exotic. Mandy likes funky furnishings and unusual jewelry, the bigger the better. Places that land on her list of favorites have to be a little bohemian, quirky with a classic twist, full of variety...and not too pricey. Mandy earned a B.S. in Interior Design at Texas Christian University and has a residential design business, Cloud Nine Design, that allows her to indulge her passion for creating "rooms of purpose and whimsey. For Meredith it's all about vintage...linens, clothing, purses, artwork. She's not a stickler for finding a true "antique" or collecting pieces of a specific era, but thrives on the discovery of anything chic that packs a punch - but watch out she moves fast, has a discerning eye, and dares to be different! Meredith also earned at B.S. in Interior Design at Texas Christian University and has years of experience in Commercial Design and Interior Architecture, currently as an Interior Designer at a local architecture firm.
They currently have 2 trips available now to
Round Top, Texas - April 2 & 5, 2008.

Mid-Century Modern

LeAnn Wester Stephenson

It can be hard to find real examples of mid-century modern classics such as Knoll tables, Eames’ chairs, and Barcelona chairs. There is one new store in the Austin area that has these classics along with other vintage items. This great store is Uptown Modern located in the Courtyard Shops at 5453 Burnet Rd., (512) 452-1200. I was in the store recently and visited with the owner Jean Heath and she informed me that it is getting harder to find mid-century modern furniture, because people are increasingly aware of what they have and not releasing that product cheaply to thrift stores, estate sales, and garage sales.

I personally know Jean and think she has a great eye, and can tell you that she always has great mid-century finds in store - So I often stop by just to see what new items she has found. Jean is a 20 year veteran of the antiques business and has great passion for what she does - stop by and see her and tell her "Hi" for me!
